Witches During the Elizabethan EraDuring the Elizabethan Era period, witches were believed to be either old people, poor people, widows, single women, unprotected women or old and wise women because they all have the requirements of being a witch. For example: the Elizabethan people would think an old and wise woman to be a witch because they would have known a lot about herbs and spices so they would think she makes evil potion. If someone in the Elizabethan Era had any unexplainable event, they would just blame it on witches (old, poor people etc). This is the reason why so many innocent people were executed.
Women were mostly accused of being witches but there were also times where men were accused for witchcraft. There were 270 Elizabethan witch trials and of the 270, 247 were women and 23 were men. If a person was accused of being a witch, they would be executed. |
Beliefs About Witches
The fear of witches and their 'supernatural abilities' created many beliefs such as:
- Witches were able to fly. Later, witches were believed to fly on broomsticks because it has a close relationship with women in the Elizabethan Era.
- They were able to make magic and evil potions over a cauldron.
- They lived alone in the wood in a house with animals such as cats, frogs, crows etc. as pets
- Witches were believed to hold nocturnal meetings called 'sabbats'
- They killed and ate babies.
- They were thought to have made an alliance with the Devil and agreed to worship and serve him. After witches made the truce, some people believed the Devil touched the witches and left invisible marks on their skin that was believed to let the witch feel no pain.
